A Vintage-Inspired Boudoir Session Full of Confidence and Playfulness
One of the things we love most about boudoir photography is how every session tells a different story. Some sessions are soft and romantic, others are bold and daring, and some are a perfect mix of both. When “B” reached out to us to book a boudoir shoot as a gift for her husband’s birthday, we could tell right away that this was going to be such a fun experience.
When we asked her what inspired her to book the session, she said, “I haven’t done many photo shoots in general, but I am excited to have fun and see myself in a different frame.” That perfectly summed up what boudoir photography is all about. Yes, the final images make an incredible gift for a partner, but more than that, it’s a gift for yourself. It’s about seeing yourself through a new lens, stepping into your own confidence, and creating something that celebrates you exactly as you are.
Setting the Scene: A Bedroom Full of Golden Light
We started B’s session in our bedroom set. The warm gold sheets paired with the emerald green walls created a moody, romantic backdrop that was perfect for her first set of lingerie. We kept the atmosphere relaxed and easygoing, letting B settle into the space and find her rhythm in front of the camera.
As photographers, we know how vulnerable it can feel to step into a boudoir session for the first time. That’s why we focus on making every shoot collaborative. We guide you through flattering poses, but we also leave room for movement and play so the photos feel authentic to you. With B, it didn’t take long before she was laughing, trying different poses, and letting herself really enjoy the moment.
The gold-and-green combination created a luxe, intimate feel in the images, and it set the tone for the rest of the session. There’s something about that warm bedroom light mixed with soft textures that always brings out a client’s natural glow.
Moving Into the Studio
From there, we moved into our studio photography space. The clean black backdrop was a dramatic shift from the first set, giving B’s images a bold, editorial edge. We love mixing different settings within a single boudoir session because it gives clients a variety of looks in their final gallery—soft and dreamy in one set, powerful and striking in another.
For the studio portion, B chose a second lingerie set that contrasted beautifully with the dark background. Boudoir photography is all about highlighting the details, so we paid special attention to the way her outfit framed her silhouette and the way light sculpted her shape against the black backdrop.
By this point in the session, B had completely let go of any nerves. She moved with ease and confidence, which is exactly what we love to see. So much of boudoir is about that transformation—watching someone come in a little uncertain and leave feeling bold, radiant, and unstoppable.
The Vintage Set: Records, Lingerie, and Playful Details
The last set of the day was one we were especially excited about. We’d created a vintage-inspired room with a record player, a velvet chair, and a gallery wall of moody artwork. The deep, dark tones of the room paired perfectly with B’s final lingerie set: a vibrant red paired with sheer stockings.
This part of the shoot felt cinematic. B sprawled across the vintage rug with her legs up on the chair, records scattered around her. The mix of textures: the lace lingerie, the velvet chair, the worn record sleeves gave the images so much depth.
And then came the best detail of the entire shoot: the tights. For her last few images, B slipped into a pair of sheer black tights with the words “tease me” and “love me” stitched up the back seams. It was such a fun, cheeky touch, and it brought out the playful side of the session. Those images ended up being some of our favorites from the entire gallery.
Lingerie for Boudoir: What B Chose and Why It Worked
One of the questions we get asked most often is, “What kind of lingerie should I wear for my boudoir session?” B’s choices are a great example of how to create variety within a shoot.
She brought a mix of textures and colors: soft sulty pjs, classic black one piece, and playful statement tights paired with a strappy red number. The combination of elegant pieces with something a little more whimsical gave her gallery a balance of sultry and fun.
When choosing lingerie for boudoir, we always recommend bringing at least two to three different looks, including one that makes you feel powerful and one that makes you feel soft and romantic. And if you want to bring a piece that adds a touch of personality—like B’s “tease me” tights—it’s always a win.
More Than Just Photos: Finding Confidence Through Boudoir
Looking back on B’s session, what stands out to us most isn’t just the images we created, but the energy in the room. There was laughter, movement, and a tangible shift in confidence as the shoot progressed.
Boudoir photography is about so much more than lingerie or posing, it’s about connection. Connection to yourself, to the moment, and to the parts of you that maybe don’t get celebrated enough in day-to-day life.
B came into the studio excited to see herself in a different frame, and by the end of the day, she was glowing. Her gallery wasn’t just a birthday gift for her husband, it was a reflection of her own strength, beauty, and playfulness.
